Coral Gables has some of the oldest residential pools we work in, and it shows. A lot of the Mediterranean Revival homes near the Biltmore were built with narrower, deeper pools than what you'd find in a newer Kendall subdivision, and the coping around them tends to be original terrazzo or coral rock, beautiful, but slicker than modern non-slip pavers when wet.
Our coaches usually do a quick walk of the deck before the first lesson in these older homes, mostly to flag anything a parent might not think twice about, a step with no handrail, a shallow end that isn't actually that shallow. None of it stops a lesson from happening, it just changes where we start.
Between the banyan and oak canopy on a lot of Gables streets, some backyard pools get real afternoon shade by 3 or 4pm. Families who want a cooler lesson time often ask for that window instead of the standard late-morning slot, and honestly, for older kids who overheat quickly. It's a good trade.
