How to Actually Vet a Swim School (Beyond Star Ratings)

JULY 2, 2025·3 MIN READ

A high star rating tells you people were happy, generally, but it doesn't tell you why, or whether that experience will match your specific situation. A few more specific things are worth checking before booking anyone.

Read a few of the actual reviews, not just the number

Look for reviews that mention something close to your situation, a nervous toddler, an adult beginner, a specific neighborhood — rather than trusting the aggregate score alone. Specifics tell you more than a star count ever will.

Ask about instructor consistency

Some swim schools rotate instructors lesson to lesson. For anxious beginners especially, that inconsistency can slow progress considerably. Ask directly whether you'll have the same coach week to week.

Confirm the cancellation and refund policy up front

A clear, honestly stated policy, even a strict one — is a better sign than vague reassurances. It means you know what you're agreeing to before you pay.
